Dr. Murphree's Health News
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
APRIL 2004

I’ve been in practice for over 13 years. I’ve seen a real shift in the public’s perception of health in the last few years. In chiropractic college I was, in many ways, subjected to an “us (chiropractors) against them” (medical profession) mentality. This was largely due to a defensive posture taken by some chiropractic institutions in response to a propaganda campaign initiated by the American Medical Association, to “stamp out” chiropractic (and all other non-medical health professions).

In the late 1970s, the Supreme Court found that the AMA was guilty of trying to monopolize health care for political and economic reasons. The Supreme Court ordered the AMA to immediately stop the “negative propaganda” campaign, and to begin referring to, and cooperating with, the chiropractic profession. Chiropractic is now the fastest growing health profession in the world.

The effects of years of politically motivated criticism could still be felt when I attended Life Chiropractic College in the late 1980s. I graduated from there in 1990 and was filled with a different propaganda campaign, one that railed against the evils of drugs and conventional medicine. For the first few years in practice, I was content to use my hands to “adjust” patient’s spines to help restore their health. I loved helping people and quickly built a large practice – 70-80 patients a day. However, I began to notice that, while I was able to help most of the patients who came to me with musculoskeletal problems (back, neck, sciatica, disc, shoulder, pain, etc.), they would still suffer from other illnesses that didn’t always respond to conventional medicine. Why? I asked.

This led me on a journey that still burns bright within me today. I started asking my patients about their diets and lifestyle. I found that most of my patients had such an unhealthy lifestyle and were so uninformed about their bodies that they were doomed to a life of poor health and misery.

I began to slowly add diet and nutritional advice into my practice. Little things like recommending magnesium (natural muscle relaxers) and finding that patients didn’t need to see me every week after all. I found that patients who took a good multivitamin/mineral supplement started having less pain, more energy, and felt better overall. I read dozens of medical, nutritional, and biochemistry books. I traveled around the country and trained with some of the masters of nutritional and integrative medicine. I took all the post graduate classes I could on nutrition and biochemistry. I went back and relearned all the biochemistry I had forgotten from chiropractic school.

Slowly, I saw my practice change from seeing 70-80 musculoskeletal patients a day, to seeing 15-25 “medical misfit” patients a day. These complicated and challenging patients had either fallen through the conventional medical cracks (didn’t respond) or were seeking a more natural way to restore their health.

My practice continued to grow to accommodate the ever-increasing misfits with Fibromyalgia and CFS. These are some of the toughest patients to deal with and many doctors elect not to treat them at all. They have multiple problems, diffuse pain, depression, fatigue, insomnia, food and chemical sensitivities, headaches, low thyroid, irritable bowel syndrome… the list can go on and on. I was able to help many of these patients. I was using cutting-edge nutritional and physical therapies including functional medical testing, orthomolecular medicine, herbal medicine, kinesiology muscle testing, and allergy treatment. I also began to realize that conventional medicine wasn’t all bad and started to refer patients to local doctors who were open-minded. Conventional medicine is so entrenched in our society that anything that differs with the usual customs of medicine are quickly labeled as “unscientific,” or worse, “quackery.” I began to feel the pressures of ridicule from local doctors and potential patients who couldn’t break free of having to have the approval of conventional medicine.

To counter this insecurity, I decided I would open my own medical practice. This practice was based on integrating prescription and natural therapies (integrative medicine) for the prevention and treatment of disease. As the clinical director, I either wrote or oversaw all of the nutritional and medical therapies used in our practice. I wrote the protocols for all the IV therapies including chelation, H202, and vitamin/mineral (used to treat Fibromyalgia and CFS). I trained in anti-aging medicine and initiated the use of Human Growth Hormone injections.

I learned a great deal about integrating traditional and alternative methods. I learned first-hand how prescription medications could provide quick relief for many common illnesses. This was especially true for the medical misfits. Some prescription medications were tremendously helpful including natural Bio-identical hormones (tri-estrogen and progesterone cream), Armour thyroid, T3 Therapy, low dose Cortef, proper sleep medications (only after 5HTP, melatonin or other naturals didn’t work), antibiotics for acute bacterial infections, cortisone for acute back pain and respiratory infections.

Unfortunately, I also learned that medications don’t always work and have side-effects. A majority of our patients were medical misfits who had already been to dozens of doctors and therefore on a variety of prescription medications. Many of these medications were more harmful than helpful. I had already come to the conclusion that prescription medication didn’t offer much hope for these medical misfits. I knew that correcting the person’s biochemistry was the key to restoring a person’s inborn healing mechanisms. Prescription medications could, in some cases, be helpful, but they could never be better than our own self-regulating, God-given healing mechanisms. The medical practice continued to grow and we moved onto the campus of a large hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Red tape, insurance demands, and an ever-increasing financial overhead started to affect how we practiced. Eventually, we became so overwhelmed with patients that we fell back into the conventional medical paradigm of 10-15 minute office visits ending with more prescriptions (either nutritional of medical). Patients were now on dozens of supplements for a variety of symptoms. We had lost some of the original ideas that prompted me to start the medical practice.

I sold my interest in the practice and, with great trepidation, opened my own one-man practice once again. How was I going to continue to see patients with complicated illnesses (something I feel called to do) without the aid of prescription medications? I would soon find that nutritional medicine can and does hold its on when paired against chronic illnesses.

I found through trial and error that the less I referred to my old medical clinic, the better many of my Fibromyalgia patients did. The reasons were many, but mainly, the less medications the patient was on, the easier it was to restore their own self-healing mechanisms. This doesn’t mean I don’t refer to medical doctors, I often do. But, now that I’ve been on both sides of the fence (conventional medicine and nutritional medicine), I know that the type of nutritional medicine I practice works! Even if conventional medicine continues to say it doesn’t.

I had come full circle. I now knew that the way to feel better (and get well), was to get healthy from the inside out. So I wrote a book all about why nutritional medicine works. Patients now call, email, or travel from all over the world to consult with me. Why? Because it works! These “medical misfits” had usually been to dozens of medical doctors, including those at Mayo and John Hopkins. Yet, conventional medicine had failed them. But some little chiropractic intuitionalist in Birmingham, Alabama was able to help them. It works!

But, I’m not the only doctor getting these results; more and more doctors are turning to nutritional medicine. The tide is turning, and conventional medicine is beginning to lose some of its luster. It has so many positive things to offer; if only it would remove its head from the sand and acknowledge that the path it has led us down is, in fact, the wrong path. “Today’s standard, AMA-approved medicine is rooted in treating symptoms, rather than causes. Its dependence on drugs and surgery is ruinously expensive to patients, insurance companies, and society as a whole.”
Derrick Lonsdale, M.D., Why I Left Orthodox Medicine

I fear that I will offend those who can’t change paradigms quickly enough to realize that every science, no matter how lofty it is held, must be open to scrutiny. However, there is no denying that conventional medicine and our health care system is failing us. Someone has to stand up and declare that the emperor has no clothes.

"Each progressive spirit is opposed by a thousand mediocre minds appointed to guard the past."
Maurice Maeterlink

There is no doubt that conventional medicine saves thousands of lives each year. Conventional medicine excels at life saving treatments. It is often effective in alleviating many of the symptoms associated with certain illnesses. However, no one is born with a Prozac deficiency (please see last month’s newsletter about the dangerous side-effects associated with Prozac). Treating symptoms doesn’t translate to having better health. Conventional medicine therapies often attempt to mop the wet kitchen floor (symptom) while ignoring the leaky roof (cause). Even those within the medical profession are acknowledging that the use of drugs to pacify every symptom is only a temporary band aid at best and, at worst, causes many of the symptoms seen in doctor’s offices each day. “Most over-the-counter, and almost all prescribed, drug treatments merely mask symptoms… Drugs almost never deal with the reasons why these problems exist, while they frequently create new health problems as side-effects of their activities.”
John R. Lee, M.D. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Menopause

“Every dose of medicine administered to a sick person should be seen as an admission of defeat on the part of the practitioner. For a doctor to drive back a symptom without uncovering its cause is malpractice in one of its more hazardous forms.”
J. Seate

Are We Winning the War on Disease?

In 1900, six of the ten top causes of death were as follows: tuberculosis, pneumonia, and diphtheria. Today the list is headed by heart disease, cancer, and iatrogenic (physician caused) illness. Heart disease and cancer have increased by almost 300 percent since 1900. Eighty three of every one hundred people will die from a chronic disease including arthritis and diabetes. The treatment of chronic diseases accounts for 85 percent of the national health-care bill.

Western medicine has substantially decreased our risk of dying from an acute infection; we are now more likely to be struck down by some chronic affliction like cancer, stroke, or heart disease. This substitution of killers has been bought at a price. The price seems to be the evolution of a society addicted to drugs.
Dr. Irving Oyle, The Healing Mind

We now have a pill for every symptom man can come up with: poor sleep, depression, constipation, poor digestion, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, pain, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, sinusitis, hay fever, and more. And the makers of these pills aren’t bashful about saturating the TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines with reasons why you need to be taking them.

All our curative agents are poisons and, as a consequence, every dose diminishes the patient’s vitality.
Prof. Alonso Clark, M.D.

Doctors Are the Third Leading Cause
of Death in the United States

As reported in the Journal of American Medical Association, over 250,000 Americans die each year from medical therapies including at least 113,000 from the negative effects of prescription medications. Death from medical errors is now the third cause of death in the U.S. behind heart disease and cancer.

The great physician Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “A medicine…is always directly hurtful; it may sometimes be indirectly beneficial. I firmly believe that if most of the pharmacopoeia (prescription drugs) were sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all better for Mankind and all the worse for the fishes.”

The System is Clearly Broken

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid stated in a recent report that the nation spent $140.6 billion in the year 2000 on prescription drugs. It is estimated that over one billion prescriptions were written last year. But, are we as a nation, healthier than other nations who spend much less on prescription medications? The United States spends more money per capita than any country in the world; yet The World Health Organization ranks the overall health of the U.S. 15th among the 25 industrialized countries. Our current AMA dominated paradigm is based around controlling symptoms. Conventional medicine has made very little progress (if any) in correcting the causes associated with most of today’s chronic illnesses: heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and depression.

Some of the examples of symptom-control medicine are as follows:

High blood pressure, 99 percent of the time can and should be controlled by weight loss, diet, stress reduction, nutritional supplements, and exercise. Instead, patients are medicated with potentially harmful drugs to cover up the symptoms of poor diet, sedentary life style, and too much stress.Heart-disease patients are put on calcium channel blockers that actually increase their risk of heart disease. Chest pain, high blood pressure, abnormally high levels of blood (lipids) fats and cholesterol are all symptoms brought on by poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and stress.

Drugs that lower fats (lipids) and cholesterol have been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers.
*Journal of American Medical Association, Carcinogenicity of Lipid - Lowering Drugs, January 1996

The medical profession and the media has so frightened the public about cholesterol and fat that people firmly believe they must be avoided at all costs….But this fear of cholesterol and fat is not grounded in scientific fact. On the contrary, cholesterol and fat are essential to life.
Dianna Schwarzbein, M.D. and Nancy Deville, The Schwarzbein Principle

Cholesterol and fats are the very building blocks that make up each and every cell. Cholesterol is essential for proper brain function and normalizes neurotransmitters (brain chemicals)! A deficiency in cholesterol can result in mood disorders including depression, anxiety, irritability, and “Fibro Fog.”

Cholesterol is also involved in the production of such essential hormones as DHEA, testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and cortisol. Instead of continuously poisoning (drugging) the rats (cholesterol) that inhabit the dumpster (body), why not clean up the garbage (body toxins, diet, etc.) so that the rats don’t return?

Cholesterol is not the problem. Cholesterol is only a symptom that something in the body is out of kilter. Yes, cholesterol can plug up blood vessels. But it does so as a means of damage control. The blood vessel has been damaged from too much sugar, trans-fatty acids, or other dietary errors. Cleaning up the diet is the answer. For information about the cholesterol myth, see chapter 14 in my book, Treating and Beating Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Is the Fox Guarding the Henhouse?

Is the FDA really looking out for our best interests? According to a recent Frontline program aired on PBS, the answer appears to be a resounding No. The program interviewed past employees who admitted they were pressured into covering up for potentially harmful medications that often times didn’t prove to be therapeutically effective when compared to other medicines or placebo. Yet these drugs were given patent status and released into the market.

Officials at GlaxoSmithKline, makers of the antidepressant drug Paxil, in internal documents show that it has no benefit to adolescents according to a 1998 trial. According to this document, the officials recommend that staff “effectively manage the dissemination of these data in order to minimize any potential negative commercial impact.” In other words, it doesn’t work. Other documents from the makers of Paxil show that one in sixty people on Paxil attempt suicide, while one in five hundred fifty on placebo attempt suicide (as reported by the BBC last year).

It is sobering to realize that evaluation for drug-induced deaths is not part of the review of safety and efficacy conducted by the FDA. Typically, only a few hundred patients are treated with a new drug in placebo-controlled trials before the drug is approved. Also, the duration of placebo-controlled treatment is usually short – 30 to 90 days. How, then, will we determine whether a drug increases mortality?
Dr. Thomas Bigger, Columbia University, in an editorial commentary that appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine, June 1994

Discovering new dangers of drugs after marketing is so common that overall, 51 percent of approved drugs have serious adverse effects not detected prior to approval. Each year prescription drugs injure 1.5 million people so severely they require hospitalization and as stated above, over 100,000 die each year. Around 1,400 employees work for the FDA whose main duties relate to approving new drugs. Yet, there are only 52 full time employees who monitor the safety of all the drugs currently on the market.

*The FDA estimates that only about 1% percent of adverse events are ever reported. For example, the toxic effects of the heart medication dioxin are well documented and include a particularly serious heart arrhythmia. Each year, the FDA receives an average of only 82 adverse-reaction reports for dioxin, suggesting that the drug is not particularly dangerous. However, when Medicare records were systematically studied, a shocking 202,211 hospitalizations due to dioxin adverse effects were found in a seven-year period. This would be equivalent to over 28,000 adverse reactions per year due to dioxin.
JAMA, 1998[279;19]: 1571-1573, Time to Act on Drug Safety, May 20, 1998

Drug used to prevent heart attacks causes FIVE-FOLD INCREASED RISK for heart attacks!

Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers used to treat high blood pressure and heart disease, increase risk of stroke and heart attack. Calcium channel blockers were put on the market without proper testing, says Dr. Kurt Ferver, Wake Forest School of Medicine, and for those who take them there is not only an increase in strokes but a five-fold increase in the risk of heart attacks. (People's Pharmacy, 1997 and 1998)

Lamisil: drug used for fingernail and/or toenail fungus may result in liver failure, some of these cases leading to death or liver transplant.
From Novartis, the drug's manufacturer, May 2001.

Alternative doctors have been warning about the dangers of Premarin for years. No one was listening. They are now.

Premarin: menopause medication increases risk of blood clots, stroke, and gallbladder disease and has many other severe side-effects. From Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, August 28, 2002

All estrogen used in replacement therapies and contraceptives were listed on December 11, 2002, by the federal government as "known human carcinogens," a significant upgrading of the dangers they pose.
Washington Post, December 12, 2002

Topamax: drug used to control epilepsy, off-label drug for anxiety or insomnia- may cause serious eye damage and/or blindness. As of August 17, 2001 there have been 23 reported cases: 22 in adults and one in pediatric patients. It is generally recognized that post-marketing data are subject to substantial under-reporting.
Letter from the manufacturers of Topamax (Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc.) to doctors.

NSAID use Linked to Risk of Miscarriage
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are among the world’s most widely used medications. Research conducted by the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute showed that “the use of NSAIDS during pregnancy increased the risk of miscarriage by 80 percent.
British Medical Journal, August 16, 2003:327, pp368-71

Propulsid: a drug used for GERD and gastro paresis (delayed emptying of the stomach usually found in diabetics), caused severe heart rhythm abnormalities. The original warning: "Due to reports of serious heart arrhythmias and deaths in people taking Propulsid (Cisapride), the label had been changed to reflect these dangers. In June of 1998, the FDA issued a statement reporting 38 deaths in the United States from people taking Propulsid.

Viagra: used for erectile dysfunction, caused 522 deaths as well as increased risk of heart attack, heart rhythm abnormalities, congestive heart failure, strokes, sudden low blood pressure and fainting. 522 deaths have been linked to the use of Viagra over a one year period! Has anyone seen the TV commercial for Viagra? If you have, you could easily assume that if you take Viagra your life will be perfect, you’ll feel and look like a twenty-year-old.

To learn more about potentially harmful drugs, visit the FDA's website and look for the "Dear Health Professional" letters at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety.htm

I recommend you purchase a medical pill book from your local book store. You should never take a drug without first researching it in your book. Make sure it is something you truly feel you need and that you are fully aware of the potential side-effects.

Only 10-20 Percent of Medical Therapies Have Been Shown to be Beneficial

The Office of Technology of Technology Assessment, under the authority of the Library of Congress, published a year-long study entitled “Assessing the Efficacy and Safety of Medical Technology.” The study showed that only 10-20 percent of all present-day medical practice has been shown to be beneficial by scientific controlled clinical trials. The study concluded that the vast majority of medical procedures now being utilized routinely by physicians are “unproven.” For example, there have been no double-blind, placebo-controlled studies on coronary bypass surgery (over 300,000 operations a year, at a cost of over $10 billion) and no double-blind placebo studies for the use of immunosuppressive chemo and radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer. When some of these long-overdue clinical trials do take place, the results may make the water even murkier.

Three Billion Dollar Hoax

An estimated 12 percent of Americans aged 65 and older have osteoarthritis of the knee. A recent study that evaluated the effectiveness of knee surgery showed that surgery was no better than placebo (fake operation). Dr. Baruch Brody, an ethicist at Baylor University who helped design the study, called the surgery “a sham.”

However, traditional medicine has a long history of persecuting other health disciplines for not having double-blind placebo studies to support their claims. This is true for nutritional medicine, even though there have a multitude of studies that show that supplement replacement therapy could save thousands of lives each year.

Fish Oil Prevents Sudden Death

The American Heart Association reports that studies show that fish oil supplements drastically reduce the risk of sudden death from heart attacks and or stroke. The study consisted of 11,323 patients who had suffered a heart attack within the previous three months. One group was supplemented with 1,000mg of fish oil a day. After only three months, there was an incredible 41 percent reduction in the risk of sudden death. At the end of the three-and-a-half-year study, those receiving fish oil supplementation were 45 percent less likely to die from a heart related disease.

Over one million Americans suffer from a heart attack each year. Half a million Americans die from heart disease each year. It is estimated that if every American regularly took fish oil supplements or consumed two cold-water fish a week, it would save 150,000 lives a year. Twice this number could be saved the ravages of heart disease if they kept their homocysteine levels in check by taking a good comprehensive multivitamin/mineral formula

For nearly two decades the FDA prevented this life-saving information even though the research clearly showed the benefits of consuming Omega 3 oils (fish oils). The FDA fought for seven years to prevent this statement from appearing on nutritional supplement labels: “Consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” After losing a lawsuit for the right to use this statement the FDA finally had no choice but to allow the use of this statement.

The White House Urges Greater Consumption of Omega 3 Oil

It wasn’t that long ago that the U.S. government, along with the AMA and FDA, made it illegal to even imply that essential fatty acids (Omega 6 and Omega 3 oils) had any relationship to of the heart and arteries disease. To do so was labeled a criminal offense! In May of 2003, The White House urged health agencies to encourage Americans to increase their consumption of foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids and to decrease their intake of harmful trans-fatty acids. The New England Journal of Medicine, July 11, 2002;347:81-88, 132-133

Accidents do happen and people will get hurt. There is nothing wrong with surgery… when needed and when other options with merit have been explored. What doesn’t make sense to me is to diagnose a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and then to attempt to cover up the potentially disabling painful symptoms with ever-increasingly toxic medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, then steroids, then plaquinil and methotrexate (both of these drugs are extremely toxic and can cause liver failure). Rheumatologist’s have little to offer their patient’s other than continuously more toxic medicines that they are to quick to recommend. Have you ever seen someone be cured of rheumatoid arthritis through conventional medicine?

Could the way we eat, the pollutants and poisons we’re exposed to, and even the thoughts we think, have a bearing on our overall health? The answer is Yes! Nightshade foods (white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, tobacco, and peppers), food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, and intestinal permeability can all cause arthritis. Have you ever heard of a rheumatologist suggesting you try exploring one of the above or a trial of glucosamine sulfate? Probably not. Glucosamine is not only superior to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen; it is free of the side-effects. For information on arthritis, see chapter 21 in my book, Treating and Beating Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The Centers for Disease Control states that 54 percent of heart disease, 37 percent of cancer, 50 percent of cerebralvascular disease (stroke), and 49 percent of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is preventable through lifestyle modification.

Conventional Medicine Defeated by Fibromyalgia
From The American College of Rheumatology

Conventional medical therapies are ineffective and no better than a sugar pill for the treatment of Fibromyalgia.

On tricyclic medications Amitriptyline (Elavil): Four controlled trials have evaluated the efficacy of Amitriptyline in Fibromyalgia…the longest trial showed no benefit when compared to placebo. Furthermore, the overall degree of benefit was found to be relatively small in relevant outcomes such as improvement in pain, fatigue, and sleep.

Of note, 95 percent of Amitriptyline treated patients experienced side-effects.

Furthermore, use of anti-anxiety medications (Klonopin, Xanax etc.):
Benzodiazepines, corticosteroids (medrol dose packs, prednisone, etc.), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (Mobic, Celebrex, Vioxx, Bextra, etc.) agents have been shown to be ineffective and should be generally avoided.

The ACR continues to use drugs to treat Fibromyalgia, even though their own studies show they are ineffective and can cause unwanted side-effects. At the same time, they continue to ignore the work of Leon Chaitow, Jacob Teitelbaum, Janet Travell, and others who have clearly shown that the right combination of nutritional supplements can provide tremendous relief and even reverse the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

And our best therapies Amitriptyline (Elavil) and Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) could not be distinguished from placebo after three months of therapy. Long-term, follow-up observations indicated that clinical findings for patients with FMS did not change appreciably after 15 years.

The ACR has, like many physicians, thrown up their hands and admitted they have little if anything to offer for those suffering Fibromyalgia. Yet, many are quick to ridicule nutritional therapies that consistently have shown to be effective in treating Fibromyalgia. The usual reply is that “there are controlled studies.” Or how about this one: “nutritional supplements aren’t regulated.” Yes, there is a lot of garbage (supplements) out there, and consumers should be weary of suppliers who promise that their supplement can cure all of man’s ills. It just doesn’t happen that way. However, if safety is a concern, given the choice between nutritional supplements and prescription medications, give this some thought; More than 100,000 people will die from prescription medications this year. No one dies from vitamin and mineral therapy!

Dr. Janet Travell, White House physician for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine at George Washington University co-wrote Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual, which is acknowledged as the authoritative work on muscle pain. In one chapter alone, Dr. Travell referenced 317 studies showing that problems such as hormonal, vitamin, and mineral deficiencies can contribute to muscle pain and soreness.

Health Comes from Within

The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. Thomas Edison

The human body is an amazing self-healing organism – if we will just pay attention to what our body is trying to tell us. Give it some help. We will usually heal in spite of the toxic chemicals, foods, and pollution we are exposed to each day. Can diet cokes and fried pork skins really be healthy? …We imagine that we can fix people, repair the body as we would repair a machine. Patient and doctor alike tend to forget the simple fact that the living body, unlike a machine, has the ability to heal itself.
Irving Cole, D.O.

You have a new stomach lining every three days. The actual cells that contact food are renewed every five minutes. You have a new liver every six weeks and 98 percent of the atoms in our bodies are renewed every year. We don’t have to think about making antibodies to defeat germs, hormones to regulate our various systems, or how to mend a broken bone, or how to close an open wound. The power that made the body still resides within the body. This same power is ultimately the power that heals the body. Health doesn’t come from a pill, a chiropractic adjustment, a massage, surgery or from anything outside of you, including your doctor. These are tools or keys that can help unlock our natural healing abilities. Optimal health resides within. We’re a physical, mental, chemical, and spiritual being. Optimal health is not merely the absence of disease. Instead, it is a byproduct of living a purpose filled-life filled with passion, joy, and happiness.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.
The World Health Organization

If we listen to our insides, we will also find that inner therapist who says, “Pay attention! I’m going to make you hurt a bit now so you will wake up.” …I sometimes call pain and suffering God’s reset button. It is sometimes the only thing that will make people change.
Bernie Siegel - Love, Medicine, and Miracles

What is your illness trying to tell you?

It is rare that we stop and slow down long enough to evaluate what is our purpose in this lifetime. Are we doing what God intended us to do? Are we happy with our life, our work, our marriage, our spiritual growth? Life’s calamities make us pause and reevaluate these questions. Sometimes we still don’t slow down, and we experience more challenges until perhaps, one day, we listen to what it is God is trying to tell us.

Slow Down

It is my belief that the timeless quality of silence is so important that we can call it one of the common denominators of successful healing.
Harold Bloomfield, M.D. - Discovering Inner Energy and Overcoming Stress

God wants you to be healthy. Most of the time, the body heals itself. However, sometimes we need help. Prescription medications have been shown to be helpful for alleviating symptoms, but at what price? Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and nutritional supplements are what the body uses and needs to function properly. Without these essential (must have or you die) nutrients, disease processes start to show up. Science has already shown that stark deficiencies in some of these nutrients causes such life-threatening diseases as Beriberi, Scurvy, and Pellagra. Remember, we are as different on the inside as we are on the outside (I learned first-hand in anatomy lab). One person may need 10mg of vitamin B6 while another person with carpal tunnel syndrome (a symptom of vitamin B6 deficiency) may need 200mg. Where do our neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) come from? From various amino acids including 5HTP, GABA, Glutamine, and Phenylalanine. Where does thyroid hormone come from? From the amino acid Tyrosine. Every vitamin, mineral, and essential nutrient in the body is there for a purpose as God intended.

Steps to Take to Increase Your Health

1. Ask, What is my body trying to tell with this symptom? Always ask Why? Why do I have pain? Correct the underlying biochemistry; don’t just cover it up.

2. Take a good comprehensive multivitamin/mineral formula. A one-a-day, or two-a-day Wal-Mart or Centrum Silver WON’T DO. I don’t understand how anyone who reads could not be on a good multivitamin. This also means having their family on a good multivitamin as well. Don’t let your children inherit your health problems. See Treating and Beating Fibromyalgia, chapters 11-14.

3. Drink 70 ounces of water a day. The body is 75 percent water.

4. Avoid unhealthy foods: sugar, fried foods, margarine, overly processed foods, hydrogenated oils (trans-fatty acids), and overeating. See Treating and Beating, chapters 14-16 & 18.

5. Increase your consumption of cold-water fish or take a fish oil supplement on a daily basis. See Treating and Beating, chapter 14.

6. If you have bloating, gas, or indigestion, this is a warning sign that you need to be taking a digestive enzyme.

7. Get seven-nine hours of sleep a night. See Treating and Beating, chapter 6.

8. Make time each day for your hour of power. Read spiritual material, pray, meditate, and exercise. See Treating and Beating, chapter 25.

9. Purchase and start using a prescription drug encyclopedia.
