When was the last time you felt healthy? Can you remember how it felt to be totally alive? Has it been a while since you woke up full of energy, pep, and purpose? Some individuals can’t remember the last time they felt good. They’ve been sick and tired for so long they’ve forgotten what it feels like to be healthy. So many individuals I interact with around the country say they are so “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
We live in a fast-paced society that rewards the doers and achievers with material success. Our society is built on the public’s desire for more material possessions. This in light of the fact that most people are already in debt, work over fifty hours a week, can’t afford nor need half the things they are told (through endless commercial marketing) they must have. People are tired tired of the rat race, tired of always feeling like they need to do more, be more, have more. When is enough, enough?
Very few of us can turn our mind chatter off long enough to know what it is we really want. Why are we here in this lifetime? Most individuals have been conditioned to wake up each day and run as fast as they can to obtain the American Dream.
Wholeness or health is our natural state. The nature of healing involves removing the obstructions to this natural state and bringing individuals into alignment with themselves and their world.

This is how professional bike racer, Lance Armstrong, beat testicular cancer. His love for cycling inspired him to overcome cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain. He had a grapefruit-sized tumor in his brain and several golf ball-sized tumors in his lungs. He was told he would never ride his bike again and had only a few months to live. Not only did he beat the death sentence, he went on to win five Tour de France races in a row. The Tour de France is one of the most grueling sporting events. In the course of three weeks, riders race hundreds of miles a day and climb 14,000-foot mountain peaks. Lance Armstrong is only the second American ever to win the race. When a person is inspired (in Spirit), things like cancer and grapefruit-sized tumors in the brain don’t stand a chance.

A growing body of scientific evidence about the role of spirituality in mental health, especially in the prevention and treatment of depression, supports centuries of anecdotal evidence. Several studies have looked at the role of spirituality in preventing depression, but recent studies suggest those who are intrinsically spiritual recover from depression more quickly and have less severe depressive symptoms.
A review of 147 previous studies, published in 2003 by researchers at Brigham Young University and the University of Miami, found that a higher level of "religiousness" (spirituality) in people consistently was associated with substantially lower levels of depressive symptoms.

Feeding the Spirit
We can’t separate our mind from our health any more than we can separate our eyes from our vision. The connection between the mind and health is both profound and undeniable.
Psychoneuroimmunology is a science that studies the inter-relationships between the mind, brain, and immune system. Research now shows how the brain and the rest of the body share the same electro-chemicals. Four decades of ongoing research is just now making its way into the medical and public arena. This research shows how the brain uses the nervous system to communicate with every system in the body, including the immune system. But more important, this research led to an understanding of how thoughts, emotions, and the experiences they create influence our overall state of health.
The mind controls the brain. The brain controls the body. Science has now shown that the entire body, each cell and even every molecule, is connected to one another through our thoughts which trigger the electro-chemicals. The brain is an organ a complex organ. It is connected to other organs, including the heart, by the circulatory system (blood vessels), nervous system, and the chemicals (hormones) used to communicate a thought into action. Our mind controls our thoughts (or our thoughts control us), which initiates an electrical and chemical response that causes a physical (bodily) reaction. A scary movie creates thoughts that send out electrical-chemicals that raise our blood pressure, tighten our muscles, and increase our heart rate. It is all connected. Our thoughts create our physiology.
Think of the brain as a musical instrument and the mind as the musician. The instrument is played by the musician. Nothing happens until he or she picks up the instrument and begins to play. The brain is an instrument (organ) under the influence of the mind. A person’s inner spirit is the conductor of the symphony. This inner spirit influences what the brain says to the body. Like the conductor of the symphony, your spirit has the ability to control every note played by the body. Some people may call this inner spirit our innate intelligence, some may call it the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.

Your illness is an opportunity to evaluate what was, and probably still is, not working in your life. We rarely question what is truly important in our lives. Why are we here? For what purpose? Normally, we live each day as the day before, sometimes sleep-walking through entire portions of our life. Only in the face of drastic calamity do we take the time to ask these questions. In Betty Eadie’s book, Embraced by the Light, she describes her near-death experience. On her brief time in heaven, she says, “…I saw that we literally have power to affect our own health. I saw that the spirit in each of us is powerful, that it can give strength to the body to ward off illness, or, once the body is sick, to cause it to heal. The spirit has power to control the mind, the mind controls the body. Our thoughts have exceptional power to draw on the negative or positive energies around us. We have the choice to become positive or negative. Simply by thinking positive thoughts and speaking positive words we attract positive energy. There is power in our thoughts. We create our own surroundings by the thoughts we think.”
We Are the Gardeners of Our Life
We are all gardeners. We are given a body, mind, and spirit, all of which must be nurtured in order to grow. What we eat, drink, breathe, and think determines the health of our garden.
Deepak Chopra reminds us, “Happy thoughts create happy molecules, and healthy thoughts create healthy molecules.”
The soil of your garden is largely determined by the thoughts and nutrients you have in your body. The healthy garden needs the right nutrients.
To feel better and be well, you must first get healthy. To have a healthy garden, you must pay special attention to the soil. The soil must be free of weeds, stumps, and stones for the optimal growth of our plants (cells). The healthier, more vital our cells are, the better we feel. Soil that is full of essential nutrients yields healthy, robust plants. Soil that is depleted of nutrients produces inferior and disease-ridden plants. The soil is the key. Our bodies don’t make ESSENTIAL nutrients, so we must get them from our diet. Modern food processing has stripped most of the nutrients out of our foods.
Fifty percent of Americans are deficient in magnesium. Two-thirds of American children are deficient in more than two essential vitamins or minerals. Most all children are deficient in Omega 3’s (fish oil), and many suffer poor mental abilities, including ADD, because of their essential fatty deficiencies. Please don’t let your children inherit your health problems… start them on a good multivitamin and essential fatty acid product! My seven-year-old daughter has been taking a multivitamin/mineral and essential fatty acid supplement since she was two years old.
You can’t get the needed quantities of these nutrients from the foods you eat, even if you eat six servings of fruits and vegetables a day!
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration study, which analyzed over 234 foods over two years, found the average American diet to have less than 80 percent of the RDA of one or more of the following: calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese. Other studies have demonstrated magnesium deficiency in well over 50 percent of the population.
How To Get Started
You should start with a good Optimal Daily Allowance multivitamin/mineral formula. Always take the best, most comprehensive multivitamin/mineral you can, then build around it. You will save money and help ensure that what you are taking will be absorbed and utilized. Study after study shows that those who take a multivitamin reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and many other modern-day illnesses. Centrum Silver, One A Day, and other heavily marketed, one- or two-a-day multivitamins, are mostly garbage. They are full of additives, colorings, fillers, and artificial ingredients which often prevent them from being digested and absorbed (many simply pass wholly undigested in our stools). These products are also based on a 1940’s Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). This Recommended Disease Allowance will help you avoid getting scurvy, but it won’t help you be healthier.
Studies have shown that each individual’s biochemistry is different. Because we are as unique on the inside as we are on the outside, one person may need 1,000mg of Vitamin C, while their co-worker needs 3,000mg a day to be at optimal health. The Optimal Daily Allowance (ODA) for these essential vitamins and minerals is usually 50-100 times more than the RDA. Even if you don’t notice an immediate difference in taking the right supplements (most do), stay with it. By following this advice, you will get healthier and, ultimately, feel better. Some individuals may start a nutritional program but end up taking bottles and bottles of different supplements, a one-a-day multivitamin, vitamin C, vitamin E, Calcium, B complex, etc. Before you know it, you have dozens of half- empty bottles (getting tired of taking all this “stuff”) and have spent a considerable amount of money (usually on inferior products).
Again, start with an ODA multivitamin that delivers all the needed essential (have to have them or you die) vitamins and minerals you need each day. Others take various supplements, including herbal formulas, to cover up symptoms: Ginkgo Biloba for poor memory, St. John’s Wort for low moods, etc. These supplements can be very helpful and most are much safer than prescription medications. However, if people use herbal medications to cover up symptoms, then they fail to understand that each symptom is a call for help…a warning sign from your body. Remember vitamins (B vitamins, vitamin C, E, D, A etc.), minerals (magnesium, calcium, manganese, etc.), essential fatty acids (omega 3, 6, and 9), amino acids (5HTP, glutamine, methionine, etc), and other nutritional co-factors (CoQ10, bio-flavonoids, etc) are what your garden needs to create the right environment for healthy cells, organs, and tissues to grow.

The Road Less Traveled
In our society, we are trained to think of an illness as something that has somehow invaded our bodies. We usually don’t question why, only what pill we should take to make it go away.
Each new symptom and medical condition is attacked with another drug in hopes of alleviating the patient’s misery. High blood pressure is attacked with diuretics.
Diuretics cause mineral deficiencies that lead to muscle cramps and pain. The muscle pain is attacked with anti-inflammatory medications. Anti-inflammatory medications eat up the lining of the stomach and are toxic to the liver. The stomach pain is attacked with antacid medications: Zantac, Nexium, and others. These antacids block the stomach acid needed for proper absorption of vitamin B12. A vitamin B12 deficiency then causes early pre-senile dementia and depression. The depression is then attacked with an antidepressant. The antidepressant causes tardive dyskinesia (involuntary tremors). The tremors are attacked with tranquilizers. I could go on and on.
Some individuals are content to continue down this path: each new symptom requires another drug. They may start on this path at an early age and spend the rest of their life constantly searching for another drug to make them feel whole again. Often, the very medications they are on creates more problems (symptoms) that are then medicated with more drugs, which create more problems.
Eventually, their health spirals out of control. They lose all hope and spend the rest of their lives in constant pain (physically, mentally, and spiritually). Finally, after exhausting all other options, they may start a nutritional program like mine.
They may say the nutritional replacement program didn’t work. It, like everything else they have tried, failed them. But being healthier never fails anyone, they just fail to see that their only hope of getting well and feeling better is to get healthy, and this takes time.
Healing Takes Time!
Some individuals are so sick that it may take years before they get well. It took years to get so sick; getting well won’t happen overnight. Some give up and lose all hope and back into the darkness of despair.
Just Look to the Light
The Eternal Journey, by noted scientist Craig Lundall, Ph.D. and Harold Wieldson, Ph.D., is one of many books by lay people and scientists that validate the near-death experience: people who have clinically died and then were brought back to life (by medical or spiritual intervention). Those who have had a near-death experience are known as NDErs. One passage from an NDEr describes how they were bathed in a brilliant light that was pure love (God).
When I got close to the light, something on the side of my vision distracted me. I looked down and saw a host of people. Rays of light were shining over the tops of their heads, but they didn’t seem to notice. They appeared to be shuffling around, and I could feel anger and confusion coming from them. It was as if they were lost, and they were agonizing over their pain they felt. They seemed to be earthbound and unable to see the light that was over them. As I looked at the people, I thought to myself, you can go to the same place, all you have to do is look at the light.
Surely there is a heaven and hell on earth just as there is in the afterlife. Some individuals are so hopeless and so miserable that they shuffle along filled with anger and confusion, never realizing that all they have to do is look up at the light.
A twenty-year study conducted by George Engel, a professor of medicine at University of Rochester, showed that 70-80 percent of all chronically ill patients had experienced extended periods of feeling helpless before the onset of their disease.
Don’t give up hope. Getting healthy requires hard work, patience, and an openness to change.
